GAP is short for Guaranteed Asset Protection.

Accidents, fires and thefts resulting in a total-loss can leave you short changed when your car is evaluated by your motor insurance.

With GAP Insurance we will pay the difference of how much it is worth now and how much you paid for it.

It is important to note that the GAP insurance only pays out if your motor insurance pays out on a total loss claim. Examples of where your motor insurance may pay out a total loss claim includes where the vehicle has been stolen and never recovered, the vehicle has been destroyed by fire or the vehicle has received sufficient accidental damage to the extent that is not economical to get repaired.

The benefit of having GAP insurance is probably best described in following example.

  1. Mr A buys a brand new Nissan Qashqai for £25,000
  2. Mr A buys a 5 year GAP insurance policy soon after the purchase
  3. After 4 years of ownership the Qashqai is damaged in a storm
  4. Mr A makes a claim under her motor insurance and contacts her GAP insurer
  5. The motor insurance declares her car a total loss and offers Mrs A £10,000
  6. The GAP insurer pays Mrs A £15,000 so that in total she has got back £25,000
